A New Approach

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Ursus is the brand name of the beer that used to be produced here, in Cluj-Napoca. It used to be, because SABMiller, the parent company, decided to move the entire production to a different city (I don’t even care where…). The old brewery was closed… But not for long: this month the brewery has reopened its gates with a special treat. A museum/mini-brewery/pub has opened up in its place. It is a unique concept in Romania and it is the only such brewery of SABMiller. The place is now also special for me, because we organized one of our first a beer-nights with our team there last week 😛 …
Ursus Beer Factory
A bit late, but I decided to post some information about the place, because most of the reviews I have found so far were in Romanian. So, here goes one out for all the people of the word, who speak English: a short review of the new Ursus Beer Factory.

A big iron gate with the iron bear logo is what separates the Motilor street from the outside terrace. The terrace is huge with big tables for 4-8 people all covered with umbrellas to protect from rain or the summer heat. Nothing fancy, just enough (although the security cameras were a new thing…) . Inside it offers a factory feeling, with a lot of iron bars and rustic/iron furniture and decoration. The distillery is also visible through a plexy-glass window and it too offers a unique atmosphere for the pub. Take special note of the chandeliers inside, they are made out of a special material 🙂 .

The prices are OK, for a place like this: a 0.4l Ursus Premium Draft costs 4.5RON (~€1.00), while the unique non-filtered Ursus, which is produced only at this small brewery, costs 5.0RON (~€1.15). The only problem with this special beer, is that it is very limited: it is served only from 7:00PM and the stocks get depleted in about an hour (we were told it is a company policy, to make sure there is non-filtered beer at 7:00PM when most of the guests arrive…).
There is also food being served, the prices though are bit higher than an ordinary restaurant in Cluj. One can always eat some sandwiches at lower prices, but there is a time limit for those too: only until 1:00PM (we were not told why… I guess it is another stupid company policy…). It is better, though, to leave the food alone… after all, people go to a “Beer Factory” to drink beer, not to eat… 🙂 …

Another important thing is the empty places: there are practically none 🙂 . We went there at around 6:00PM and we could barely find a place to sit (although we were 8, so we were kind of pushing for the impossible). The best thing is to book ahead, but I could not find a usable phone number to make a reservation for us. Once there, however, I have made an important “acquisition”: a usable phone number. No, I will not publish it on the internet, but I can provide it to anyone who requests it personally 😉 .

We did not visit the museum, although there is a special tour also for that (or so I was told). We were interested in the pub part and I must say it was not that bad. The waiters were a bit slow, but I guess that was due to the large number of guests they were trying to serve that night… I think the place is understaffed a bit… So the verdict from my point of view: a special theme-pub which is a must see in Cluj!.

I cannot share any pictures about the place on my Picasa account, because my stupid phone was low on battery. The usual link then, is missing from the end of this post 🙁 .

For the Kid in You: Reloaded

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

I remember when I was a child my parents always had to take me to the zoo of any city that we visited and had one. Not that I have seen so many zoos, but I have generally always liked animals. Well… my childhood “lust” has resurfaced and did not leave me in peace until I visited one of the better zoos nearby: the Zoo of Targu Mures
Zoo Tg. Mures
It is really easy to get from Cluj to Targu Mures by car. Following the main road, the E60, it is actually quite hard to miss the city. Once the city is reached, get into the center and then follow the pretty signs saying in BIG letters: ZOO (another attraction which was well marked in two weeks… wow… ). The road will lead you up on the hilltop forest where the Zoo is located. There is ample parking space, but I recommend getting one furthest from the entry under the trees (to avoid the car heating up on the sun). From there on it is only a short walk to the main entrance and visitors also have the chance to see Thomas the Tank Engine happily towing 3 wagons full of people enjoying the ride (yes, it is a kid’s land, but what did you expect?).

What was really surprising, was the entry fee: it was 5 RON (€1.20) for adults and only 2 RON (€0.50) for children. A bargain, one might think this will be a cheap zoo, but it actually isn’t: apart from really messy places, some areas are in quite good shape and the animals seem to be well fed (I am not sure if all of them are happy though… 🙁 ).

The zoo itself has a circular layout, so there are actually two options one can choose: left or right (Why complicate it? It is meant for relaxation right?). We went to the right (I guess the monkeys attracted me 😛 ). This decision, quickly turned down my mood: the first cages housing the monkeys. My impression? Small… REALLY small cages for quite big families of monkeys… The monkey house itself seemed dirty, the restrooms, which were inside the monkey house were no different. Quite the first impression, one might say…

As we moved on, however I saw, that not the entire zoo is like that. In fact, some fenced areas are quite huge and in some cases I could barely spot the animals to take a good picture. I had to have full zoom for the deer and the kangaroo, the tigers were barely visible and I could not even take a decent shot of the bison… 🙁 . I was able to make quite good shots of the bears, who seemed really friendly and some donkeys (I think those are always friendly).

One of my favorite places, however are the cat-cages. They are located somewhere in the central area of the big circle layout (apart from the tigers) and one can get some really good close-ups of some of the cats within (lynx, puma, leopard, lions and jaguars). The cats appeared to be really well fed and seemed to be just enjoying the sunshine, so this was a plus.

One thing gave me hope here also and really pumped up the value of the zoo: yes, it is under heavy development. Some new fenced areas were under construction (quite large), a new building was also being built, so I guess it is only a matter of time until the living conditions for the animals will get better. They will have to work a lot, however, on how to attract tourists: have clean toilets and for the love of God, think of at least some souvenirs and gift-shops, please…

You can see some of the photos I made on my Picasa album.

For The Kid In You

Friday, February 18th, 2011

One of the great passions of children these days are dinosaurs. Well, the eyes of the kid inside of me started to shine very, very brightly when I saw an ad that there is an expo of full-size dinosaur models here in Cluj. There was not much publicity about the event, I also stumbled upon it accidentally.
Expo Dinosaurs
The exhibit is open between the 20th of January and the 27th of February: so two more weekends for anyone interested. The ticket is not exactly a cheap one for the Romanian salaries
– 30 RON – Adults
– 15 RON – Children
– 25 RON – Students
– 70 RON – Family (Parents+children)
– Free photographing
Nonetheless we thought we’d have a look to see what is going on, so last Sunday we visited the exhibition.

I also checked their website and I can see that this was actually a portion of the entire collection. The website is in German so if you know a little, you can understand. All in all it seems that this Austrian company has invested in moving exhibitions which are both entertaining and educational.

I must say I was quite impressed: the models were realistic (of course you could tell they were plastic, but still), there was enough information next to them and they were arranged skillfully. The most interesting parts of the exhibit were of course the larger dinos: T-Rex, Albertasaurus or even a Diplodocus (30m) live sized model was present. Another great feature was the Velociraptor model, which is quite up-to-date to the latest discoveries: it was covered with feathers (big scary chicken 😛 ).

One of the added values was a free (well, actually included in the ticket price, I guess) cinema about dinosaurs. Although the movie was completely in English and there weren’t even any subtitles, there were a few children and parents watching it. Inside the improvised cinema, there was also a small sandbox for children to play the archeologists: they could play there ‘excavating’ bones of prehistoric creatures.

All in all a great few hours (for me I think it was less) to spend with your children. For them it is fun, for parents it is informative (although I could see the joy also in the eyes of some of the parents 🙂 ). Here are some pictures I have taken. Enjoy.

Small issues

Sunday, January 16th, 2011

Driven by my hidden geek instinct which is always fascinated by gadgets, I have decided to upgrade my telephone to something more than just a mobile phone. I decided to give a bunch of money to vodafone in exchange for a Samsung Galaxy S. The whole transition from a Nokia 6234 to this device was kind of like when I first decided to buy myself a mobile phone (a Nokia 3310 back then).
SGS Linksys
Yes, the phone part is nice, it works. The camera: better than the old one (and with HD video it beats any of my digital cameras I have had or currently have). The real transition for me is: the GPS and mobile internet. The GPS is great. By default it uses google maps to locate your position, it is quite accurate and it even responds to rotating the camera well. The mobile internet part is also great, because of a combination of two things:
– it always switches to a nearby Wi-Fi (instead of 3G/HSUPA)
– there is FREE Wi-Fi access in almost any public area in Cluj
(Yes, this is the same with any other smart-phone but for me this is a new way of life, so don’t even think of spoiling the joy 😛 ).

My initial joy was quite frankly blown to pieces by the sad news that for some reason it did not want to use my home router (Linksys WRT54GL) to access the internet. It connected to it, I could even reach the settings on the router, but still no internet connection. I even registered to a forum (which by the way seems nice) to find some answers to my problems. The good part was that there were no problems with other routers, but mine (but why? 🙁 ). So I tried every setting one by one on the router: everything was ok, no blocking, no filtering, I even removed all protection from it, it still did not budge. I said to myself: I WILL NOT GO TO SLEEP UNTIL THIS WORKS (bad idea): I stood awake until 3:30 AM.

But why did I stay awake that much? Well… I DID manage to fix the issue 😀 : there is a very friendly button (well, now it is) in the router settings, that I completely ignored the entire day: Reset to factory default. I did the reset, re-built my wireless network and voila it worked like a charm . So the official verdict: great phone, great router, stupid user 😛 .
