In one of my older post I have written about my trip to Slovenia. I also mentioned a fine that I received from the Hungarian Police. Well, so far I was not able to pay that fine for various reasons. Since I pretty much passed the deadline for paying (30 days) I did not do what I can do.
I searched different posts on the internet about what there is to be done. There are different views about this, most of the people did not pay the fine, because they thought the Hungarian police will not be able to track Romanian cars/citizens. Well, I did a simple check: I wrote an e-mail to the Hungarian police dept. of the county where I received the fine (Zala county), asking for info on how to proceed and if there is any additional fine for being late.
Surprise, surprise, they have replied in a quite polite way, describing exactly what I have to do, what I have to complete in order to successfully pay the fine. They even sent the ID of the fine, which I have to use for paying (which I eventually found on the ticket I received also, so they CAN track you). They did not mention any additional charges, so I guess I can simply pay the original fine as they indicated.
So, in conclusion: The Hungarian police CAN track you. If you are unsure on how to pay your fine from outside Hungary, send them a mail, they can help you 😉 .

oh, please, could you help me in due time if possible (if you see this comment soon), as I am somehow in the same situation you were with the dated fine ?
I am also a Romanian citizen, studying in Germany (English language) and I got a fine in Hungary on the high-way last time I came home, but I don’t know how I managed to lose the papers.
I kept postponing the procedure of paying the amount (I could have done it with online banking, as I have only the Deutsche Bank account for international transfers, and they told me it will be ok to transfer around 80 euros for a 20.000 ft fine) while being in Romania, and now I am already back in Germany and tomorrow will be my last day (out of those 30 days).
I wasn’t even aware of the deadline, I was on so much pressure being back home again (to solve a lot of things because I don’t come very often), but I just found the back-up paper 3 days ago and only then I read on the back of it.
I went to the bank – because I didn’t know how to do it online (and also for a payment proof) – but they cannot help me as long as I don’t have the IBAN code and BIC / SWIFT code or the Institution name.
Could you please tell me where I need to write ? To ask them about these stuff ? And I only know to write in English / Romanian, so please take into account that I don’t understand Magyar.
Thank you so much – at least in advance !
Hi Laura,
as I wrote it is good to know, in which county you have received the fine. Maybe if you tell me which county it was, or to which city you were close to, I could look up the appropriate e-mail address. Oddly enough, the national website of the Hungarian police (www.police.hu) has no common e-mail address to which people could write questions to… 🙁
If someone has received the fine near Budapest, then the county is Pest county:
